Maria Magdalena Special School - Munyu was started in 1991 by Fr. Michael Schrode, Father In-charge Munyu Catholic Parish with an aim of assisting children with mental challenges after a needs assessment research by EARS from the Ministry of Education. The first pioneer students were hosted in the church compound and all their needs met by the church. It was registered provisionally in 1994 as a church sponsored public institution by the ministry of education and the first headteacher posted by the teachers service commission (TSC).
It is located in Kiambu County, Thika East District, Gatuanyaga ward, Munyu location approximately 24 kilometers away from Thika town.
Since then, the schools population has grown to a hundred (100) boarding learners, ten (10) day scholars, eleven (11) Tsc teachers and twenty seven (27) non-teaching staff. The ages of the learners range from six (6) to twenty five (25) years. The school has five boarding houses that house the classroom, dining area and boarding facilities.
